This is Khalid Hussain, a lovely man who asked me to help him write his JustGiving page. He is preparing for a 13 mile Mighty Hike in the Yorkshire Dales, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support . Khalid hopes this is the beginning of a long career raising money for good causes. After retiring from his job as a social worker with Kirklees Council, Khalid had been wanting to do some kind of fundraising for Macmillan for a while. Through his work in social care he saw time and again the amazing difference Macmillan made in helping people deal with cancer and it’s impact on patients’ families. He thought he’d do something when the pandemic was over but then he saw the amazing efforts of fellow Yorkshireman Captain Tom Moore and he decided to get started now.
As well as setting up his JustGiving Page we discussed media strategy and how Khalid wished to present himself to the media. We felt that his blindness made his fundraising efforts more newsworthy so we agreed to lead on “blind hiker” in PR around his story. I drafted a press release for him which has led to some fine coverage in The Yorkshire Post, BBC Radio Leeds, The Dewsbury Reporter and Batley News. He has a return visit to BBC Radio Leeds booked for after his Mighty Hike, and we are working now on creating a social media profile for Khalid and his work. TV, national, international coverage and Hollywood beckons…
